Network Security Engineer

Venable LLP is seeking an experienced Network Security professional to join our growing firm. As a member of our high performing IT team based in our Baltimore, MD office, the Network Security Engineer will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining technical controls, software, and equipment in support of the firm’s Information Security Program

Core responsibilities for this role include... 

  • Maintaining and improving network defensive systems, such as firewalls, IPS, DNS protections, and packet analysis systems
  • Designing, implementing, and maintaining new security systems in support of regulatory requirements, business requirements, and Venable mission
  • Contributing to the development of Security Orchestration, Automation, and Response (SOAR) capabilities development, and integration with Venable log and network metadata analysis systems
  • Assisting the Security Operations Center with network-related investigation and threat hunting tasks
  • Working with the Enterprise Architecture team on network design and implementation

The successful candidate will demonstrate...

  • Five years of experience in engineering IT security systems in mixed network environments
  • Experience should include the following specific technologies and processes:
    • Creating intrusion signatures from network traffic samples (Snort, Suricata, Palo Alto)
    • Creating signatures for network analysis systems to identify and isolate traffic (StealthWatch, Zeek, Extrahop)
    • Implementing network management systems such as SNMP, Syslog, IPFIX, and Netflow
    • Programming to automation APIs, including Splunk Phantom, XML and REST based systems
    • Integrating threat information, such as STIX and TAXII, with firewalls and Intrusion Prevention Systems
    • Developing data acquision and writing parsers for Splunk, ELK, or other log management systems
    • Operating and maintaining Cisco and Gigamon security network devices
    • Operating and maintaining Cisco ASA, Cisco Firepower, and Palo Alto Networks devices
    • The ability to operate Linux servers
    • Advanced understanding of layer 2 and 3 networking, DNS, intrusion detection systems (IDS/IPS), PKI, implementation of cryptography, web services, and packet analysis
    • Proficient understanding of network attacks and attack methodology
  • Information Assurance Systems Architect and Engineer (IASAE) II+ level certification preferred
  • Vendor-specific networking certifications, such as Cisco, Palo Alto Networks, or Juniper Networks preferred
