Director of Associate Recruiting

Venable LLP is excited to be recruiting for a firmwide Director of Associate Recruiting.  This leadership position will play a pivotal role in the firm’s strategic associate attorney and legal staff hiring programs.

The Director of Associate Recruiting will be based in our Washington, DC headquarters and will work closely with our Legal Personnel and Training & Professional Development teams as well as firm leadership and attorney hiring committees across the firm.

Responsibilities for this role include:

  • Developing, implementing and overseeing firmwide recruiting processes for lateral associates, summer associates and other billable positions, including staff attorneys and patent agents
  • Implementing creative strategies for sourcing talent, ensuring alignment with business needs and today’s competitive market
  • Ensuring all recruiting activities comply with federal and jurisdictional requirements regarding equal employment opportunity, fair pay, federal contractor status, the firm’s Affirmative Action Plan and our commitment to diversity and inclusion
  • Overseeing the firm’s Summer Associate Program, collaborating with attorney hiring committees and recruiting staff executing our Program
  • Overseeing and directing the work of a team of attorney recruiting professionals across the firm, ensuring resources are allocated properly and all attorney hiring needs and programs are optimally supported by the department

Qualifications for this role include:

  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • A minimum of ten years of progressive attorney recruiting experience in an AMLaw100 firm, leading a national Summer Associate Program and managing lateral associate and other billable position recruiting searches
  • Experience managing legal recruiting professionals and the ability to lead a national team
  • Demonstrated understanding and experience working within all legal compliance requirements related to hiring; understanding of Affirmative Action Plans and experience executing diversity and inclusion strategies
  • Experience working in various applicant tracking and sourcing platforms
  • A commitment to working collaboratively as part of a team and ability to lead and motivate others, being innovative and strategic, and providing a high level of professionalism and client service
  • Proactive communication style and the ability to build relationships at all levels within the firm, with law school partners, and candidates
  • Strong organizational, time and project management skills; ability to manage competing priorities effectively and coordinate communications and feedback among hiring teams, search firms and candidates
